Room 205, Monday Morning
Rhys had been blissfully unaware of anything weird going on in town this past weekend. He'd been engrossed in finishing up the work on a rudimentary arm so he could at least have two hands to build a better one. Or maybe another ECHO eye...
Whatever. It'd get made.
If he could work out how to get this arm slotted into place without having to contort himself like a circus performer.
"Son of a bitch, c'mon," he muttered, having to reach across his body with his arm in an attempt to see what he was getting hung up on. Which meant a lot of frowning and jamming his hand into his shoulder socket.
Of course.

Hey, she wasn't judging. She was more like amused.

"Does he always whine like that?" she wanted to know. "It's a lot."

...That was about all she had, yup.

They were so dismissive of poor, poor Kuzco.

"This school makes no sense," Faith muttered. "Or is this just how high school is? Because I have no frame of reference, but this makes no sense."
no subject
"High school is nothing like that," Rhys replied vehemently. "College isn't even like this."
First of all, where were the crippling student loans and anxiety inducing standardized tests?

"You look sixteen," she pointed out. Dryly. "And you sound sixteen."

"No, it... reconstructs people if they die. You know, for money. Hyperion tech."
Based off Dahl tech. Probably based off Eridian tech.
no subject
"Yeah, that's pretty weird," she said, impressively mild as she took that in. "Does it cost a lot?"
HER PARENTS WERE DEAD.
no subject
"Yeah, a ton. Usually only vault hunters can afford it."
He was pretty sure it only worked for him because of Jack.
no subject
"Okay, I'm gonna stop asking you what things are any minute now," she promised, "but what the heck is a vault hunter?"
no subject
"Oh, them?" He had to avoid the kneejerk 'bandits' response. "There are these alien vaults that are supposed to be full of tech for the taking. And people are always looking for the to get rich."
He was one of them. The shittiest one, to be honest.
"But they're really hard to find," he muttered, looking at his metal hand. "And really dangerous."
no subject
Because aliens.
"Okay, so. Hyperion makes guns and shields and machines that bring dead people back to life, aliens stuff vaults full of tech and guns for... some reason, vault hunters raid the things and get rich," she summarized. "Huh. Sounds like fun."
Spoken like a video game protagonist!
"So why don't you go looking for a vault with a New-U Machine?"
no subject
"Uhhhh." Because had gone for a vault and his life had gone to complete shit in the process? "I haven't been able to get one of those stupid 'portals' back. They just respond with a lot of impressive business doublespeak."
Also, going back was probably certain death until he figured some things out. Maybe got a snazzy new outfit.
no subject
"Ew," she said, sympathetically. Ish. "Sounds like they might be onto you and don't want you stealing any more stuff."
Those noticeable glances at the mechanical hand told a pretty decent story of what went down. She was just filling in some blanks here.
"I sorta got stuck here after stealing some stuff too," she offered. "But it was less 'portals' and 'resurrection machines' and more 'go to school, get out of juvie.'"
no subject
"I'm pretty sure people think I'm dead," he admitted with a sigh. "On the upside I get to skip out on student loans."
Who hasn't wanted to fake their own deaths to avoid those?
no subject
Being stuck in high school with no way home and no arm had to suck.
"How's the second run at high school going compared to the first time around?"
